Desenzano del Garda is the most populous town among all those bordering Lake Garda; in addition, it is the second most populated town in the province of Brescia in Lombardy. It has a land area of sixty square kilometers and is positioned in the southern part of the lake.
Regarding the place name Desenzano. There are two hypotheses about the origin of the name of this town: the first is that it derives from a Latin word indicating a person’s name, Decentius, a wealthy man, owner of a prestigious villa built in the 4th century that can still be visited and is known as the Villa Romana; the second has instead a more popular origin: since the town rests on gentle slopes the name seems to be able to be related precisely to the word descent. Desenzano del Garda, a famous and enchanting resort on Lake Garda, is today a popular tourist destination. It has an artistic, historical, and archaeological heritage that has its roots in Roman times.
It is a lively and active town in all seasons; the main internal street, which runs parallel to the lakefront and crosses the main squares, offers a wide and varied presence of restaurants, stores, and bars. The town also offers the opportunity to practice numerous sports both in the town and in neighboring towns: there are riding stables and basketball, golf, and tennis courts a public swimming pool. It is a tourist destination for everyone.
The town can be reached by train and there are numerous connections with the cities of Brescia, Verona, Milan, and Venice thanks to Trenord, Italo, and Trenitalia trains. The highway exit is located a few kilometers from the center and the main services. Finally, numerous daily boat, steamship, and hydrofoil connections are available from April to September with all the towns on the Lake. During the summer period, it is possible to rent boats, with and without a driver, for trips on the Lake to visit neighboring towns.
